Ingredient Spotlight: Alpha-Arbutin, The Ultimate Acne Dark Spot Lightener
January 17, 2022

Do you struggle with hyperpigmentation caused by inflammatory forms of acne?
Your search for a holy grail acne dark spot eradicator is over. Alpha-Arbutin is the ultimate pigment lightening ingredient you will ever need in your quest for clear, radiant skin.
What Causes Skin Hyperpigmentation?
Melanin is a dark pigment produced in cells called Melanocytes. These pigment-generating cells contain an enzyme known as Tyrosinase which is activated when the skin is subjected to stress such as an inflammatory acne breakout or damage caused by UV exposure. The activation of Tyrosinase leads to the creation of Melanin which appears as dark spots and discoloration on our complexion.
Alpha-Arbutin: What Can It Do For Acne Dark Spots?
Alpha-Arbutin is a plant extract that is derived from natural sources such as Bearberry, Blueberry and Cranberry plants. It is formulated in more skincare products than you know, from toners, serums to even moisturisers, as it an effective brightening agent that delivers a host of skincare benefits including:
1. Fade And Eradicate Acne Dark Spots
A powerful Melanin-inhibitor, Alpha-Arbutin when applied topically to the skin stops the effects of Tyrosinase and consequently prevents the formation of dark spots. With consistent use of the nifty ingredient, you can minimise new acne dark spots from forming and gradually diminish pigmentation that resulted from previous breakouts over time.
2. Brighten Dull Complexion And Treat Uneven Skin Tone
Touted as a skincare staple for its skin brightening effect, the plant extract is a must-have for people who desire radiant skin. Whether you have a dull complexion or discoloration that resulted from sun damage, the inhibition of Melanin production can bring you one step close to achieving glowing skin.
3. Defend Against Age Spots
Numerous anti-aging skincare are formulated with Alpha-Arbutin because of its pigment-lightening property. Age spots are one of the main concerns of people looking to preserve the youthful appearance of their complexion and with the help of Alpha-Arbutin, they are able to maintain a supple, imperfections-free skin.
How Can I Use Alpha-Arbutin In My Skincare Routine?
When introducing the ingredient into your acne skincare routine, do a patch test to rule out any negative side effects just to be safe. Apply a small amount of product to your jawline and if you do not experience any irritation within 24 hours, you may proceed to use the ingredient as a spot treatment once a day. If there are no signs of irritation after 1 week of usage, you may use the product during both morning and night time, as either a spot treatment or over your entire face.
Alpha-Arbutin is a gentle yet effective skincare ingredient, as such it works well with Alpha-Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) such as Glycolic Acid, Lactic Acid, Citric Acid and Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C). When using Alpha-Arbutin as a treatment serum, you may use it on cleansed skin and before applying a moisturiser. Do note that if your skincare routine involves several skincare products containing actives, do limit them to one active product each routine to maximise the results and minimise irritation. Combining many different products with actives may in turn cancel each benefit. As we always say, Less is More.
It will take at least 1 – 2 months of consistent use to see improvements to your acne pigmentations so do stick to it even if you don’t see any improvements just yet! Just a word of caution though, not all variants of Arbutin are good for your skin. For instance, Beta-Arbutin is an unstable version of the compound and therefore, it is wise to stick to Alpha-Arbutin for the best results. Be sure to keep a look out for the right ingredient when shopping for your next skincare product with Alpha-Arbutin!
