The Difference Between Sleeping Mask & Night Moisturiser

“Should I use a sleeping mask or a night moisturiser?”

With so many types of hydrating skincare products on the market, it may be hard to tell them apart and decide if you actually need them in your daily skincare routine. Hydration is the key to healthy and glowing skin and therefore, it is not surprising that there are many ways to keep your complexion moisturised. In this article, we examine the difference between a sleeping mask and a night moisturiser.

Sleeping Mask vs Night Moisturiser

A key similarity between a sleeping mask and a night moisturiser is that they both serve to deliver an essential dose of hydration to your skin. Your skin needs to stay hydrated and balanced to perform its key functions.

Dermatologist Deanne Mraz Robinson explains, “An overnight sleep mask and moisturiser can have similar ingredients and benefits, however, a mask will typically have higher concentrations of active ingredients for a boost of moisture, while a moisturiser is formulated for daily use as more of a maintenance plan.”

Therefore, sleeping masks can be likened to a supercharged version of a night moisturiser. They deliver a higher dose of moisture and are usually formulated with higher concentrations of active ingredients that work with your skin during its overnight regenerative cycle. Sleeping masks typically have a gel-like consistency which penetrates your skin deeply unlike lightweight lotions or creams.

When Do I Use A Sleeping Mask If I Am Already Using A Moisturiser?

It is common skincare wisdom that a moisturiser completes a skincare routine. But there may be instances where your skin can also benefit from a sleeping mask!

If you have dry skin, your skin may benefit from the intense moisture boost of a sleeping mask. Sleeping masks are especially helpful during colder and drier months as well and can benefit all skin types that need extra hydration.

Sleeping masks may be a skin saviour for people with sensitive skin as they help to soothe the skin overnight and work to alleviate sensitivity symptoms that may have arisen from exposure to environmental stressors during the day.

On the other hand, sleeping masks formulated with exfoliating acids, such as Glycolic Acid or Lactic Acid, helps to renew the skin by sloughing off dead skin cells. Over time, regular usage of exfoliating sleeping masks will help to refine skin texture, fade fine lines and clarify your pores.

Depending on your skin type and skincare goals, sleeping masks may make a great addition to your daily skincare routine. It is important to note that even though sleeping masks are packed with skin-loving ingredients, use them only about 1 – 3 times a week to prevent their strong concentration of active ingredients from irritating your skin!
